The pioneers of the Lawrence Jewish Community -- a handful of merchants -- formed a close-knit "family" by the earlier parts of the 1900s. Our "family" grew, as families will. Professionals and academics enriched our ranks. Today we're from four continents and a crazy quilt of states.

Our home -- the Jewish Community Center -- is a shelter for this diverse community in the heartland of America. Joint leadership from Jewish merchants and faculty led to the building of our facility, which serves as synagogue and community center. Enlarged by the community in 1982 to meet the needs of our expanding family, it serves us still.

The men and women of this community -- intergenerational, interdominational, from all branches of Judaism -- celebrate together and create a Jewish tradition that is unique. We have a part time Rabbi.

Hillel members and other students from KU enrich our community observances. Newcomers enlarge and bring fresh talent and ideas to our "family."
