Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life honored University of Kansas Hillel Executive Director Jay Lewis as a Richard M. Joel Exemplar of Excellence for his outstanding work as a Hillel professional. Lewis was one of eight professionals from around the world who received this award at the Hillel International Professional Staff Conference in Baltimore, Md., in December.

In presenting the award, Hillel President Wayne L. Firestone praised Lewis for “advancing a culture of Jewish pride, leadership, and enthusiasm.”

Firestone credited Lewis with increasing student participation in Hillel activities exponentially, strengthening its fiscal health, and building its volunteer board. “Jay is well regarded by the university administration and students alike, and was named Advisor of the Year by the entire student body.”

Named in honor of Richard M. Joel, Hillel’s president from 1988 to 2003, the award acknowledges professionals whose enthusiasm and commitment create meaningful Jewish campus experiences for hundreds of thousands of students around the world.
